The app
Voulum runs on your Mac and nothing else. It doesn't have an account, analytics or ads, and it doesn't send what you hear anywhere. The audio it handles stays in memory while it plays and is never saved.
Audio and microphone access
macOS asks before Voulum can pick up app audio (needed to change each app's volume) and before it reads your microphone's level (only in the Mixing Desk style, only while the popup is open). You can turn either off in System Settings ▸ Privacy & Security.
Now playing
To show what's playing, Voulum asks media apps and browsers for the current title using Apple Events. That stays on your Mac.
Updates
Voulum checks GitHub once a day for a new version (Sparkle). That request carries the app version and your macOS version, like any download. You can turn automatic checks off in Settings.
